The symbols of man’s domination and individuality suffuse the myth of war. Mountains as “sacred mountains” (like the Kyffh¤user in Germany, for example) had long symbolized the nation, as well as human willpower, simplicity, and innocence. But now during the war they stood above all for revitalization of the moral fiber of the Volk and its members. Mountains had not always served this function. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries they had been strong symbols of individual liberty, but they had also come to symbolize national liberation, and it was this aspect of mountain magic which, as we shall see, became predominant during the war.
