Like Daughter, Like Pops

May 17, 2008

A couple of months back Angelina Jolie visited Iraq to furnish occupiers with photo ops and, after a meeting with Gen. David Petraeus and neocon Paula Dobriansky, announced to the world that ‘the surge’ was working. (Purportedly there to investigate the plight of the refugees, she declared the best thing for them was the presence of yet more US soldiers). Now her father, Jon Voight, is on a junket dispensing equally profound advice. Ha’aretz reports:

Academy Award winning actor Jon Voight is currently in Israel to express his fervent support for the Jewish people and his opposition to exchanging land for peace with the Palestinians.

On Tuesday, Voight visited Sderot, the western Negev town that suffers regular Qassam rockets strikes from the Gaza Strip.

From another report on the visit:

Voight said his experiences led him to believe that Israel should not negotiate with Palestinians militants for a truce…

“They are barbarians,” Voight said, referring to the Gaza militants. “They are relentless, looking to destroy (Israel),” the actor said. “If somebody breaks your leg, don’t give another. Don’t play this game.”

After meeting the Israeli children, the actor failed to launch a bunch of colorful balloons tied to a bag that held prayers for peace. The weight of the bag kept the balloons skirting the ground.

Even Ha’aretz was embarrassed enough by the performance to add the following for balance:

Palestinians complain that Israel is responsible for much of the deprivation in poverty-stricken Gaza. Though it pulled out of the territory in 2005, Israel controls all but one of its border crossings. Since the Islamic militant Hamas overran Gaza last year, Israel has enforced a blockade, leading to severe shortages of vital supplies.
