Imran Khan’s Message

November 7, 2007

Shortly before leaving Pakistan I had met Imran Khan in Peshawar. I was saddened by the fact that for all his personal integrity, conviction, and drive, he was surrounded by some of the most of inept and insincere people. It has been four years since, and the events of past year alone have confirmed Imran’s position as a politician of uncompromising principle (which ironically many hold against him), courage and acuity. While the media and petty gossip-mongers remain obsessed with the private affairs of his past, those with minimum political imagination see in him the faint glimmer of hope. Unlike the political mainstream, he has refused to pander to the West, and while his movement derives much of his support from the civil society, he has not been unmindful of the injustices inflicted by the Musharraf regime in the name of fighting ‘terror’.
