Fatima Bhutto Criticizes Benazir
October 26, 2007
I like Fatima Bhutto. Earlier she wrote a pretty decent piece on Che’s legacy. And now she takes on her opportunist aunt. The response of the Pakistani media is breathtaking in its sheer inanity. Here is from the Daily Times‘ editorial: “Thus while she may be well-meaning, objectively she has jeopardised her political career by throwing overboard the entire bulk of political analyses which the media in Pakistan have made of the political implications of BB’s return…Fatima is allowing her personal anger to cloud her political judgment.” In other words, if you recognize the collective imbecility of the Pakistani media, you are allowing your “personal anger” to cloud your “political judgment”. This carries an eerie ring of a warning, methinks.
KARACHI, Oct 21: Benazir Bhutto must take the responsibility for the deaths of 139 people in an attack on her homecoming rally by exposing them to danger for the sake of her own ‘personal theatre’, her estranged niece said.
Fatima Bhutto, the granddaughter of late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, also told AFP in an interview that her aunt’s return from exile would plunge the country further into turmoil.
“She insisted on this grand show, she bears a responsibility for these deaths and for these injuries,” the 25-year-old said at her family home in Karachi.
Fatima Bhutto, the daughter Murtaza Bhutto, who was killed by police in Karachi in 1996, has recently launched a series of salvos against her aunt.
She accused the PPP chairperson of protecting herself on her return to Pakistan with an armoured truck, while bussing in hundreds of thousands of supporters despite warnings of an attack.
“They died for this personal theatre of hers, they died for this personal show,” she said.
Speaking in a sitting room decked with oil paintings of her grandfather, father and other family members — although not her aunt — she also said her aunt was not the enemy of militancy that she claimed to be.
“She talks about extremism and nobody else points out that the Taliban was created under her last government,” she said, referring to the Taliban regime that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001.
Fatima also condemned the amnesty on corruption charges given to Ms Bhutto by Gen Musharraf.
The younger Bhutto, however, said she was not likely to enter Pakistan’s turbulent politics any time soon.—AFP

It’s sheer impossible for someone to believe that she should take responsibility for murder of those people killed.
Miss Fatima Bhutto’s father Shaheed Mir Murtaza Bhutto was killed during a resistance with Police near his home, absolutely that was a planning assassination of Shaheed Mir Murtaza, yet why didn’t Mir Sahb agreed to let the Police search his car, just to save his people who were also killed alongwith him. Because their duty and their solmen pledge was to die and live with Shaheed Mir Murtaza Bhutto.
So, why should she fear someone’s threats.
If an American woman comes to Pakistan and lives in the country married to a Pakistani man, would she not yell and go for court justice if his husband beats her, of course she would even though she knows how average women live out here; irrespective of being silent like average Pakistani women do, it’s because she’s an American she knows her rights. Mohatarma Bhutto is also a US. and U.K educated woman she realizes her rights just for the sake of few threats she may not live in exile. Someone has to sacrifice.
No Offense!

Fatima Bhutto is a charismatic and a very intelligent girl. I have never been a voter of PPP but I love to read her. What I dislike about her is only the way she writes about her aunt. I will not say that her allegations against her aunt are false rather I will concede that everyone knows this truth. She looks going too much personal against her aunt. I can imagine how shattered she feels for the unfortunate murder of her father but the public and I would still like to see her an unbiased writer and a leader if she can maintain unbiasness.
Anyway today I extend my sympathies to Fatima on the murder of her aunt (May her rest in eternal peace) I am sure today again she feels the same way down on this another loss. Today she will have forgotten all the differences with her aunt and will be recalling good memories only.
Allah Bless You!

I had been reading details about you and moreover your calibrated article on various aspects of life in and around you. The recent tragedy affecting the Bhutto clan is certainly beyond words to express and don’t read me wrong as I am not getting judgmental in the professional aspect of Ms. Benazir Bhutto by calling her good or bad, right or wrong but certainly hold high opinion about you for the sheer reason that even with numerous difference, you have honoured family traditions has been held TIGHT and RIGHT. Hats off to you for maintaining the balance which is rare …..
I just want you to know that people who stay in limelight are not just critically examined to be criticized but equally acclaimed too. Keep up the good work in all possible ways.

I seriously doubt if Fatima will be reading these blogs. But just in case she does: Her writing style is engaging and she touches topics that most people seem to gloss over. I have a comment to make on the the very touching article she wrote about the hit on her father; it is very hard for me to believe that her aunt was complicit or had knowledge of the act. Can one consider that it is possible that Benazir was truly distraught about hearing of Murtaza’s death & it was not theatrics? Perhaps Fatima can ask some of Pinky’s Convent school friends if they ever saw her cry?
PPP should extend a gesture of reconciliation & goodwill to Fatima by not fielding any of their candidates against Fatima, Ghinwa and their key candidates. In fact, they should tell their voters in those respective districts to vote that way. They can then see how the coming term goes when she does have a seat. Everyone knows that Fatima will be a significant factor in the elections, not in 2008, but in the following one. PPP may as well groom her, otherwise someone else will pick her up in their party.

There is nothing more then to say that Fatima is a talented person with some tragic background: which is always good for an artist or politician as well. I do understand her father`s story but is it the only reason for her to write? No right Fatima should write freely more openly and should participate in politics btu not as a daughter of Mir Murtaza Bhutto But as DAUGHTER OF PAKISTAN. Pakistan Zindabad and Pakistani may Allah bless them with the wisdom and knowledge

Yes, Fatima is the only hope for Pakistan from Bhutto family- she is the real Bhutto by blood and intellect. I am a regular reader of her articles and it’s hard to believe that she can have this oservation and intellect to write these articles in a young age. Her writings are based on very facts and concern of the welfare of masses is remarkable. But before she walks in to the real field of politics, she has a lot of chalenges to face. Intellectual like Dr. Mubasher Hasan could be a very dependable guide but do not have enogh votes which counts in democracy and the people who have votes are not dependable at all. So please Fatima, take care of yourself first and then politics. We do not want to lose you for nothing. You can lead but lead the nation carefully and wisely. All the best, An unknown founder of PPP and a former PRO, Iranian Embassy, Saudi Arabia.email.piplaw@hotmail.com

In the hot spring of 1989 I was sick with dysentary travelling in an over-night mini-bus (van) from Faisalabad to Lahore. I had been quite out of it for some days and needed proper treatment. I sat with a group of PPP legislators. Something like their car had some problem and they were forced to use that public/ private transportation. At length the others slept — one fellow speaking Queen’s English amused himself with a discussion with me. After all the normal questions including an in depth assessment of my opinion of things I’d observed I passed the litmus test. We had a discussion of politics. I said everyone I know believes politicians are nothing but bullshiters in America. He: What do you think of our Benezhir? Me: She could be more independent in her policies to achieve something for your country. He: Ha! Let me tell you something young man. It is amazing she has been able to change anything at all. The true ruler of this country is the President of the United States, don’t tell anyone I told you so (we’d never get a vote!) but that is the truth. If she dared push too much of an agenda she would be dead the next day. The bullet with Benezhir’s name on it has already been made. Who has made that bullet do you think? Me: I don’t know, who? He: The CIA. They may not be the ones even to sponsor it but it wouldn’t happen without their full approval. Zia got a little away from their agenda and where is he? Dead. The world will have to change a lot before this (relationship) is changed. I won’t see it but maybe you will. Me: Well then what is the point to elect someone? He: It is a matter of increments, maybe change something just a bit….. Me: I could not accept those conditions. He: Then you are a braver man than me. Life is worth living, learn to compromise, don’t go look for your death.
Damn. I still live today years later. I didn’t compromise. Reading the news from Pakistan this all comes back into my mind.
Benezhir, may Aullah grant her soul rest, dealt with the devil and got burned. Dearest Fatima was right to criticize and she has been right to forgive her now. Only fools would speculate and turn this issue. Khoda hafez.
