Reading the Jamail interview transcript made my my blood boil.
The 1 in 3 dead or refugee Iraqis created by the invasion and occupation that our political leaders and their corporate media allies thought was such a laudable venture bear tragic testimony to their supine willingness to acquiesce with US aggression and corporate imperialism.
By any estimation these people by getting it so badly wrong forfeit any right they claim to have to laud it over us with their pretensions to moral or political leadership.
The humanitarian catastrophe foreseen by everyone in the anti-war movement has come to pass. The few brave and unembedded reporters, who like Jamail, simply report the facts they see on the ground, paint a picture of a country that has been turned by Western intervention into a hell on Earth where the cowardly US aerial bombardment has reached fever pitch and is wreaking an horrendous toll in civilian lives.
Unembedded accounts of the conflict like Jamail’s should re-ignite the anger the anti-war movement once felt about what is being done in our name.We once talked of mass walk-outs from our places of work to bring about UK disengagement. It never happened.
Reports like Jamail’s should force us to ask why the movement has lost its momentum so badly and done an unforgivable disservice to the Iraqi victims of US/UK aggression for whom we,with our typical Western arrogance, claimed to be able to speak.
The fact that Jamail can move unhampered in and out of Jordan and Iraq is an indictment of the corporate media’s complicity in the war of aggression they pretended was one of liberation.
If the barbaric genocide initiated against ordinary civilians in Iraq that began, let us never forget 17 years ago, with a US/UK- initiated UN embargo and continued with 12 years of preparatory bombing attacks on the country’s infrastructure, continues to go unreported and unpunished-our world will be racked by imperialist attack and counterattack for generations to come.
The historians who in the future make use of Dahr Jamail’s Dispatches will not find it as easy as the corporate media have to convince us that there was not a US/UK plan to break up,commit genocide in and
destroy Iraq from the very beginning.
