But it is a threat to American hegemony in the Middle East. Iran is the only serious regional rival to US power. Thus the Americans want any pretext to constrain Iranian ambitions. Want proof of this? Check the US official sanctions and unofficial banking sanctions on companies doing business/trying to invest in Iran.

The Americans aren’t against the Iranians because they “sponsor terror”, are a threat to Israel or because they’re a managed/fake democracy. They were all that after the hostage crisis then the Americans were involved in the Iran-Contra crisis. They’re against Iranian power and development.
