Fisk on September 11
August 25, 2007
One of the consequences of the more loony conspiracy theories about September 11 has been that it has made is easier for true believers to discredit or dismiss even the legitimate questions. I agree with them to the extent that the official story remains the most improbable, however what they offer in its stead is so full of speculation that it makes the official story appear credible by comparison. Here Fisk is compelled follow the necessary distantiation ritual before admitting that he also has his doubts about aspects of the official story. Personally I think there is a strong case to be made for the fact that the carnage was avoidable — some, like those who sold stocks the night before, were clearly in the know. So ‘let it happen’ has more traction than ‘made it happen’.
Each time I lecture abroad on the Middle East, there is always someone in the audience - just one - whom I call the “raver”. Apologies here to all the men and women who come to my talks with bright and pertinent questions - often quite humbling ones for me as a journalist - and which show that they understand the Middle East tragedy a lot better than the journalists who report it. But the “raver” is real. He has turned up in corporeal form in Stockholm and in Oxford, in Sao Paulo and in Yerevan, in Cairo, in Los Angeles and, in female form, in Barcelona. No matter the country, there will always be a “raver”.
His - or her - question goes like this. Why, if you believe you’re a free journalist, don’t you report what you really know about 9/11? Why don’t you tell the truth - that the Bush administration (or the CIA or Mossad, you name it) blew up the twin towers? Why don’t you reveal the secrets behind 9/11? The assumption in each case is that Fisk knows - that Fisk has an absolute concrete, copper-bottomed fact-filled desk containing final proof of what “all the world knows” (that usually is the phrase) - who destroyed the twin towers. Sometimes the “raver” is clearly distressed. One man in Cork screamed his question at me, and then - the moment I suggested that his version of the plot was a bit odd - left the hall, shouting abuse and kicking over chairs.
Usually, I have tried to tell the “truth”; that while there are unanswered questions about 9/11, I am the Middle East correspondent of The Independent, not the conspiracy correspondent; that I have quite enough real plots on my hands in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Iran, the Gulf, etc, to worry about imaginary ones in Manhattan. My final argument - a clincher, in my view - is that the Bush administration has screwed up everything - militarily, politically diplomatically - it has tried to do in the Middle East; so how on earth could it successfully bring off the international crimes against humanity in the United States on 11 September 2001?
Well, I still hold to that view. Any military which can claim - as the Americans did two days ago - that al-Qa’ida is on the run is not capable of carrying out anything on the scale of 9/11. “We disrupted al-Qa’ida, causing them to run,” Colonel David Sutherland said of the preposterously code-named “Operation Lightning Hammer” in Iraq’s Diyala province. “Their fear of facing our forces proves the terrorists know there is no safe haven for them.” And more of the same, all of it untrue.
Within hours, al-Qa’ida attacked Baquba in battalion strength and slaughtered all the local sheikhs who had thrown in their hand with the Americans. It reminds me of Vietnam, the war which George Bush watched from the skies over Texas - which may account for why he this week mixed up the end of the Vietnam war with the genocide in a different country called Cambodia, whose population was eventually rescued by the same Vietnamese whom Mr Bush’s more courageous colleagues had been fighting all along.
But - here we go. I am increasingly troubled at the inconsistencies in the official narrative of 9/11. It’s not just the obvious non sequiturs: where are the aircraft parts (engines, etc) from the attack on the Pentagon? Why have the officials involved in the United 93 flight (which crashed in Pennsylvania) been muzzled? Why did flight 93’s debris spread over miles when it was supposed to have crashed in one piece in a field? Again, I’m not talking about the crazed “research” of David Icke’s Alice in Wonderland and the World Trade Center Disaster - which should send any sane man back to reading the telephone directory.
I am talking about scientific issues. If it is true, for example, that kerosene burns at 820C under optimum conditions, how come the steel beams of the twin towers - whose melting point is supposed to be about 1,480C - would snap through at the same time? (They collapsed in 8.1 and 10 seconds.) What about the third tower - the so-called World Trade Centre Building 7 (or the Salmon Brothers Building) - which collapsed in 6.6 seconds in its own footprint at 5.20pm on 11 September? Why did it so neatly fall to the ground when no aircraft had hit it? The American National Institute of Standards and Technology was instructed to analyse the cause of the destruction of all three buildings. They have not yet reported on WTC 7. Two prominent American professors of mechanical engineering - very definitely not in the “raver” bracket - are now legally challenging the terms of reference of this final report on the grounds that it could be “fraudulent or deceptive”.
Journalistically, there were many odd things about 9/11. Initial reports of reporters that they heard “explosions” in the towers - which could well have been the beams cracking - are easy to dismiss. Less so the report that the body of a female air crew member was found in a Manhattan street with her hands bound. OK, so let’s claim that was just hearsay reporting at the time, just as the CIA’s list of Arab suicide-hijackers, which included three men who were - and still are - very much alive and living in the Middle East, was an initial intelligence error.
But what about the weird letter allegedly written by Mohamed Atta, the Egyptian hijacker-murderer with the spooky face, whose “Islamic” advice to his gruesome comrades - released by the CIA - mystified every Muslim friend I know in the Middle East? Atta mentioned his family - which no Muslim, however ill-taught, would be likely to include in such a prayer. He reminds his comrades-in-murder to say the first Muslim prayer of the day and then goes on to quote from it. But no Muslim would need such a reminder - let alone expect the text of the “Fajr” prayer to be included in Atta’s letter.
Let me repeat. I am not a conspiracy theorist. Spare me the ravers. Spare me the plots. But like everyone else, I would like to know the full story of 9/11, not least because it was the trigger for the whole lunatic, meretricious “war on terror” which has led us to disaster in Iraq and Afghanistan and in much of the Middle East. Bush’s happily departed adviser Karl Rove once said that “we’re an empire now - we create our own reality”. True? At least tell us. It would stop people kicking over chairs.

It’s a shame the establishment left, here personified in Fisk seems so frightened of being classed as “ravers”.
The piece he’s written here is utterly devoid of any historical context but still oozes with the condescending “I don’t buy this but ….maybe” line that people who fear losing respectability so often spin when they contemplate what future generations will see as glaringly obvious.
How many wars has the US initiated on trumped up wholly false evidence?
Well, the answer is near enough all of them. All the evidence is in the public domain. It’s postmodern amnesia that seems to afflict writers like Cockburn and Fisk who thereby serve establishment purposes admirably well.
There is nothing new about what Fox News is doing today, proselytising for a US attack on Iran, from what Hearst newspapers were doing in 1898 fabricating a casus belli in order to jumpstart US empire-building in Cuba,Hawaii and the Philippines.
Between 1898 and today all the wars in which the US has engaged have been spun. That is based on thoroughly false premises.
Remember Pearl Harbour, the Korean War,the phoney war in Laos in 1958,the Tonkin Incident(1964),April Glaspie’s invitation to Saddam to invade Kuwait (1990),WMD….
The list is endless. All these wars were all fought on the basis of ludicrous pretexts and propaganda in order to give the US the opportunity to try out new weapons and its corporate fascist state to make huge profits.
It’s been the case for the last century and will be the case for the next until people like Fisk and Cockburn begin to actually look a little bit more carefully at the historical record.
Small children will look at those towers collapsing in years to come and wonder how anyone could posssibly believe the official US version of what happened.
With up to a million dead in Iraq what price the next US Pearl Harbour?

There are those supporters of the US government who seem to want a terror attack to happen again, so no wonder there is a great deal of scepticism about the official story.
Perhaps its the same with the doubts about 7/7, especially concentrated among Muslims, if opinion polls are to be believed. The thinking goes, if the police shot an electrician dead on the tube at point blank range and cover it up, what else was false about the events in July two years ago.
Unless there is a public inquiry into 7/7, conspiracy theories will similarly grow.

You certainly don’t have to be a muslim to work out that 7/7 was another false-flag op.
As with 9/11,there just happened to be an anti-terror exercise against such an attack being conducted simultaneously. So,as with 9/11 the security services actually tasked with preventing an attack were utterly bamboozled as to what they saw and believed to be unfolding before their eyes.
“Well,we have hi-jacked planes heading towards New York right now.Is this an exercise or for real, please confirm…..?”
So run the tapes of the NORAD exercise just over the border in Canada that was going on on 9/11.
On 7/7/05,the same question was asked as the bombs exploded on the Tube.A security company official told the radio that his company had been running an exercise rehearsing how they would deal with a bombing attack on the Underground at the very same time the bombs exploded.
Well, maybe Robert Fisk and Alastair Cockburn and all their friends on the establishment left haven’t quite worked it out yet.Their failure to question the official accounts of both atrocities renders them complicit.
On 9/11 specifically,if the taped footage of the Towers coming down that day hasn’t convinced you that the official account is a load of beloney, then ponder this.
Mainstream media outlets like CNN are now trying to absolve themselves from complicity with the war-mongers by pleading that were so intimidated by the Fox “Showdown With Saddam” propaganda blitz that they actually thought it best to collude with the drive to war rather than lose in the ratings war.
In other words, rather than lose their jobs they were willing to spin the same WMD,Al Q’aida-Saddam links horsecrap-if it meant they could keep their jobs.
I’m afraid,in order to stay in the mainstream commentators have to work at it and effectively collude with the corporate agenda or they won’t stay the course. The profit motive overrides any vocational commitment to tell the truth.
Those who do the real investigative exploration are rarely professional reporters such as Fisk. The diggers come from, often as not, other professions entirely but the best ones make sure they’ve got the time and the commitment before they dive into the murky depths of the latest elite cover-up.
What they usually discover is that the real conspiracy theories are the very official accounts so eagerly ingested and regurgitated by the mainstream media.
One such investigator was John Buchanan who in 2004 gained access to the US National Archive in which he discovered the extent of the complicity of the Bush military-industrial elite with the Nazis before and after WW2.
He also discovered Prescott Bush’s complicity with a Wall St.plot in 1934 to assassinate FDR and establish a fascist dictatorship along the lines of the one Bush,DuPont,Remington,Harreman and Morgan Stanley were bankrolling in Germany.
Comparing these events to those that transpired on 9/11 in his book Fixing America,Buchanan drew attention to the evidence of Indira Singh,a Wall St. consultant hired to uncover fraud and insider-dealing at Morgan Chase Bank.
Singh found that Morgan Chase had financed the US government’s purchase of software from a company called Ptech. The software was susequently embedded in all US military computers, including the NORAD Command and Control System that failed to detect the hijacked airliners heading for NY on 9/11.
Ptech’s co-founders were Saudis with ties to Al Qaida. They were apprehended following the attacks but, like the story they have not since surfaced in the mainstream.
More dilligent researchers than Fisk or Cockburn will be surprised perhaps to discover that Ptech still currently trades out of Quincy,Mass.
Since no mainstream reporter touched Buchanan’s story(aside from the Bush one that surfaced here in the Guardian)George Dubya (Prescott’s grandson)went on to win the 2004 election with ease.
Maybe there’s a moral there somewhere but you won’t discover it in the mainstream media.
