On the analogy between Rwanda and Darfur the role of Western NGOs and media in the former is instructive.

No reports of RPF massacres in Rwanda were ever published because journalists like the BBC's Fergal Keane and Channel 4's Lindsay Hillsum were embedded with the Ugandan/RPF invaders. In fact all journalists entering Rwanda had to do so via Uganda where they were invariably picked up by RPF agents and handlers.

Massacres at places like Nyarubuye were carried out by the RPF and staged as Interahamwe killings.Lest we forget Kagame and many high-ranking RPF were trained at Ft Leavenworth and elsewhere in the US.Kagame's speciality was information warfare and psyops.

There is an establishment official narrative that demonizes Hutus and the French which has been run by Anglo/US elites, politicized NGOs and think tanks to cover their role in instigating the genocide.

At the ICC and the UN evidence that it was Kagame and the RPF that assassinated Habyrimana and the Burundi President by shooting their plane down in order to legitimize the return to military action that would bring them to power has been suppressed.

Gourevitch is the notorious peddler of some of the worst excesses of the disinformation campaign around the genocide. As reported by Keith Harmon Snow at globalresearch in a piece called The US Sponsored the Genocide Gourevitch was at the New Yorker when it pushed the false story of the fax from Romeo Dalliere to Washington supposedly warning of his foreknowledge regarding a Hutu plan to carry out the genocide against the Tutsis.

The notorious "genocide fax" had to be in existence before April 1994.It wasn't.It came out of British intelligence in November 1995 and was copied to Lindsay Hillsum at the Observer and the UN on that date.

The Anglo-US plan for a Great Lakes destabilisation programme across the region began in the late 1980s and a Kagame take-over in Kigali was integral to that plan.

Many researchers familiar with the genocide mythology peddled by Kagame's regime abetted by the US and Britain will look dubiously at claims that Washington's enemies in Khartoum are guilty of the same crime attributed to Hutu supremacists backed by France in Rwanda.

Any idea that the US has an interventionist role to play in Darfur,or anywhere else,is preposterous.

Yea,I know they've got a very short attention span, and maybe their corporate media hasn't made clear to them that their current interventions are an utter disaster.Maybe they've got bored with hearing about the war crimes their troops and airmen have committed.Maybe it's all just got too difficult for these avid consumers of junk and disinformation to take any more.

Yea,let's go to the UN and get a shift of focus for world attention.Yea,lets send pretty boy Clooney!

While the Sudanese government is sure as hell bombing uncooperative tribes in the north of Darfur, and the Chinese are enjoying the resource extraction benefits only a client state can supply,if the US and their mercenaries get anywhere near intervenening in Sudan there will be a conflagration.

With its proxy Ethiopian war in Somalia, its blundering aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan any notion the US has a role to play in Africa is out of the running. It's a non-starter.

All the crimes the Sudanese government is committing in Darfur pale into insignificance compared to the US atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan. If UNHC found evidence of war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed by goverment militias and rebels in Sudan they sure as hell need to look at the extent of suffering and internal displacement in Iraq.

The level of trauma suffered in Iraq since the sanctions regime, the bombing by US/UK forces for 12 years before they even put their grubby imperialist feet on the sacred soil, are what the UN should be trying to make amends for.All this has been compounded by the deliberate forment of civil enmity by occupation forces.

The situation in Sudan is just as complex as in Iraq and the US does not do complexity. They're dumb, greedy,
ruthless and violent.Their politics is totally corrupt so that the very idea that another US intervention is in any way viable could only have emanated from the mercenaries like Blackwater et al,the Israeli Lobby, and neo-cons who are in the business of already raking in the massive profits that accrue from war and the consequent chaos and lack of security which comes in its wake.

The sheer mendacity of the war-mongers is there for all to see.No-one but no-one has the right to be duped again. The ridiculous claims to the moral high ground are indecently threadbare as anyone with a brain the size of a walnut must know.

I mean anyone who's spent any amount of time in East Africa would know that the idea of the conflict in Darfur having an Arab v African dimension is sheer nonsense.Neither African or Arab belong to distinguishable ethnic groups. The Darfur conflict is multi-faceted,complex and while there is a genocidal element to the killing taking place it certainly cannot be described as Arab killing African.

The attempt by the usual suspects to squish Darfur into a box called the War on Terror is an invention meant to demonise their Arab enemies.

The US might want to change the channel but we need to stick with the agenda of making sure they get their just deserts for the obscene carnage they've caused in their imperialist drive to domination since 9/11.They will happily kill another million or more just to try and save face just like they did under warcriminals Kissinger and Nixon. We should giving control, of world bodies like the UN to the people of the world generally. The General Assembly should censor UK and US,force compensation payment, before they underwrite any ridiculous policing role for the world's No.1 enemy in another highly sensitive global region like Sudan.

Any civil war will continue so long as any fraction thinks it can seize power with violence, Darfur and Iraq have this in common.

But a genocide is easy to stop, just send journalist and expose it, an offending State is unlikely to continue its criminal actions while the world documents the crime.

Unfortunately genocide often has international supporters wanting the profits of genocide, or agree the victims are "primitives" or "sub-human" who should be eliminated for the benefit of others.

All Americans should be keenly aware of their largest mine, a combine gold & copper mine in West Papua designed & built by Bechtel and operated by Freeport McMoRan. The gold & copper was discovered in 1936 by Mobil & Chevron, their geologist called it "Ertsberg" (Mountain of Ore), but it was not until 1959 when the Dutch colony discovered there was gold flowing into the Arafura Sea and began searching for the mountain source, that Rockefeller's Freeport Sulphur suddenly decided it was time to mine West Papua.

Inside the White House, McGeorge Bundy & Robert Komer told Kennedy that the US could only save itself from communism by forcing the Netherlands to sign the New York Agreement selling West Papua to Indonesian control in 1962. After General Suharto came to power by killing a half million Javanese potential opponents in 1966, Freeport Sulphur in 1967 got its first 30 year license from Indonesia to mine the Pacific nation of West Papua.

In 2004 the Yale University Law School published its report:
http://www.law.yale.edu/documents/pdf/westpapuahrights.pdf>

"Indonesian Human Rights Abuses in West Papua:
Application of the Law of Genocide to the History of Indonesian Control"

In 2005 the US Congressmen wrote Section 1115 asking questions about West Papua & Indonesia's claim of sovereignty. In late 2005 Bechtel & Freeport & Exxon used their lobby the "US Indonesia Society" to petition the US Senate to remove the entire Section 1115.

Genocide is about denial, the US Congress was not even allowed to ask questions about West Papua. 40 years of genocide (according to Yale Law School) and colonial mining courtesy of the Indonesian military. GW Bush has allowed Indonesia to keep Jihadist training camps OPEN, he also lifted Clinton's bans on the TNI, and even commenced U.S. funding & Aid to the Indonesian military which still works with Laskar Jihad and other al Qaeda networks. Why ? Gold & money ?

You say:
Most (not all) who demand action on Darfur do it out of good intentions. ... But at the same time, there are many reasons to suspect the motivation of some of the people who are behind campaigns like “Save Darfur”

But have you considered WHY did George Bush and the White House in 2004 declare Darfur to be "genocide"?

Could it be because of the YALE LAW SCHOOL 2004 report:
"Indonesian Human Rights Abuses in West Papua:
Application of the Law of Genocide
to the History of Indonesian Control" ?

The Freeport McMoRan company and Bechtel and Exxon and others owe billions of dollars of profits to their business relations with the Indonesian military Generals; these companies were very generous to George Bush's political campaign in 2000 (according to public records) - when GW came into office in Jan/2001 he called for the US to lift Clinton's bans on the TNI military, and in 2005 GW resumed a previous US policy of funding this foreign military which still hosts and works with jihadist militia in West Papua and other Indonesian colonies.

Perhaps George Bush and his friends in Washington did not want the US public to know about the genocide and US colonial mining of West Papua?

Application of the Law of Genocide
to the History of Indonesian Control” ?

The Freeport McMoRan company and Bechtel and Exxon and others owe billions of dollars of profits to their business relations with the Indonesian military Generals; these companies were very generous to George Bush’s political campaign in 2000 (according to public records) – when GW came into office in Jan/2001 he called for the US to lift Clinton’s bans on the TNI military, and in 2005 GW resumed a previous US policy of funding this foreign military which still hosts and works with jihadist militia in West Papua and other Indonesian colonies.

Perhaps George Bush and his friends in Washington did not want the US public to know about the genocide and US colonial mining of West Papua?
